Two Weeks

After waiting a long 301 days (nearly 10 months) Axton was able to return home for his 2 week leave from Afghanistan. Even though waiting for his flight to get into Des Moines seemed to take a lifetime due its continuous storm delays, it was so good to be able to bring him back home with me from the airport.

His 2 weeks at home went by quickly as the days were filled with activities with family and friends. We were able to gather together with his family that first Saturday that he was home and enjoy an evening of pizza and laser tag at the church. The next day we made the trek down to Leighton after church for a family gathering with my side of the family where we feasted on hamballs, cheesy potatoes, and seven-layer lettuce salad (requested by Axton of course!)

Monday was spent at the Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines with the family that was able to come join us. Even though the zoo was very torn up due to the additions and improvements they are making, it was definitely a good time spent with family. The rest of the week is somewhat of a blur and all the days blend together. I started working full time at my daycare from 7a-3p, so that was the time where Axton would do whatever his heart desired, and we would do things together once I was off work for the day.

We left early Sunday morning for a trip we had planned to St. Louis, Missouri. When we arrived we went to the Cardinals vs Cubs baseball game at Busch Stadium. It was crazy hot the entire time we were down there, but we managed to really enjoy our time together regardless. We stayed there until Wednesday and during that time we also went to the St. Louis Zoo, the Science Center, the Arch, a variety of restaurants, and many walks through downtown. On our way back home we stopped in Kansas City to spend a few hours with some family before finally getting back home at 11p that night. Early this morning I brought Axton to the airport so that he can make his long journey back to Afghanistan. He will return home again (for GOOD!!) next month. Please keep him and the rest of the National Guard soldiers in your prayers that these last few weeks may go well and that when that day comes they may all have a safe journey back home to their families who have been patiently waiting for their return.
