Zebby

Welcoming the newest addition to the Krueger family is Zebby the frog! Zebby is a green and black poison dart frog whose species originates from Central America and northwestern parts of South America. They were also introduced to Hawaii in order to control the mosquito population and flourished well! These frogs prefer life on the rainforest floor, especially somewhere near a stream or small pool.
Although these amazing frogs are called ‘green and black’ they actually range in color from blue and black to even green and brown. Sometimes the green even has a metallic look to it! When Zebby gets to his full adult size, he will be about 1.5 inches long (so about the same size as our red-eyed tree frog, Alfie!)
You may also be curious about the fact that the word ‘poison’ is in his name, as many people have already asked! These frogs are called poison dart frogs because of the poison glands all over their body. When living in the wild in their natural habitat these frogs like to eat poisonous ants, and it is because of this diet that they are able to secrete the poison from their skin. But because Zebby is a captive-bred frog, these critters have not been introduced into his diet, so he is not considered poisonous.
It will be interesting to watch Zebby’s daily activities as he is diurnal, meaning he is most active during the day. It will be a fun comparison to Alfie who is nocturnal and sleeps all day and is most active at night! Hopefully Zebby and Alfie’s waking and sleeping times do not overlap too much at the beginning and end of the day and cause a chirping chorus throughout the apartment! :)
